1. Do I need to soak the potato slices before air frying?

Soaking potato slices in cold water helps remove excess starch, which can promote crispiness. However, many cooks find that soaking isn’t necessary for air fryer recipes, especially when using starchy potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold. If you choose to soak, aim for at least 15 minutes, then drain and pat dry thoroughly before seasoning and air frying.

2. What type of potatoes are best for air frying?

Starchy potatoes, such as Russet or Yukon Gold, are ideal for air frying due to their high starch content, which contributes to a fluffy interior and crispy exterior. Waxy potatoes like Red Bliss contain more moisture and less starch, making them less suitable for achieving the desired crispiness.

3. How can I ensure the potato slices cook evenly?

To promote even cooking, slice the potatoes uniformly, aiming for about ¼-inch thickness. Using a mandolin slicer can help achieve consistent thickness. Additionally, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket; arrange the slices in a single layer with minimal overlap to allow proper air circulation.

4. Is it necessary to preheat the air fryer?

Preheating the air fryer can lead to more consistent cooking results. While some models don’t require preheating, it’s generally recommended to preheat to the desired cooking temperature for about 3–5 minutes before adding your potato slices.

5. How do I store and reheat leftover potato slices?

Store any leftover potato slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C) and heat the slices for 1–3 minutes until they’re heated through and regain their crispiness.
